This two day hike takes you up Volcano Atitlan for incredible views of the surrounding ‘Ring of Fire’ of volcanoes as well as views of Lake Atitlan and the wonderful landscapes nearby. If you’re lucky you may even see two especially rare and beautiful species of birds native to Atitlan, the horned guan and the Cabanis or ‘azure-rumped tanager’.
Itinerary
Day 1: Depart from Panajachel to San Lucas Toliman, where we begin the trek up to Atitlan Volcano. This hike will take approximately 7 hours, and on the way you will trek through forest and semi-humid jungle, whilst the path is lined by a ravine either side. The final 500 meters will be rocky, and near to the top of the volcano, you can enjoy the late afternoon when we reach the camping site.
Day 2: Leave very early and go back to the top of the Volcano to see a beautiful sunrise with a majestic view of Lake Atitlan and the Pacific coast. We will return again that afternoon to Panajachel. The descent will take about 5 hours.
