The eastern wing of the General Staff building, erected on Palace Square by the outstanding Russian classicism architect K.I. Rossi in 1820-1830, is a new exposition complex of the State Hermitage Museum.
The main exhibition premises are combined into three enfilade lines: the Palace Line (along Palace Square), the Singing Line (along Singing Passage), the River Line (along the Moika River Embankment) and supplemented by the central Grand Enfilade of Atrium Courts. A grand staircase located in the largest of the five courtyards leads to the exhibition area from the main entrance hall.
On the second floor of the museum, the exposition “Art of the Modern Age” is open, a thematic exhibition dedicated to the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Empire, which was located within the walls of this building. On the third floor there are expositions “Under the sign of an eagle. Empire Art «,» 19th century French painting and sculpture «,» 19th century West European art (Germany, Holland, Belgium) «, 18th century Guard Museum, a permanent exhibition about the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire, which also once occupied this part of the General Staff . On the fourth floor, in the “Gallery of the memory of Sergei Schukin and the Morozov brothers”, paintings of France of the second half of the 19th century are presented: impressionists, post-impressionists, artists of the Nabi group. Separate rooms are reserved for paintings by Matisse, Picasso and other masters of the 20th century.
Temporary exhibitions are regularly held in the General Staff halls; this is the main museum site for displaying contemporary art.
